3 Reasons Why Wedding Photographers Need a Blog

First thing’s first — Welcome to 2025!

I like to spend a few hours in December performing a yearly review & planning session. I think back on what happened in the last year (both what went well and what didn’t) and start jotting down projects and goals for the next year.

I spent last month brainstorming and dreaming of what this year would bring for my family and business.

Just a little side note – if you’d like to see my process for how I organize my yearly review and goals, send me a message! If there’s interest, I’ll include my process and templates in a future blog.

It’s always exciting – and maybe even a little scary – to put down big dreams on paper. For me, the physical act of writing (typing) the goals down and assigning them to a calendar makes them real and tangible. It’s no longer a dream in my head. Now it’s a goal. We’re getting serious.

One of the goals I wrote down for 2025 was to officially launch my blog, with the primary focus on supporting and helping wedding photographers.

Tada! Welcome to my blog!

I’ve spent months saying that blogging is a powerful marketing tool. Yet, it kept falling to the back burner for my own business.

Oops! I think we’ve all had moments like that. #honesty

Now it’s time to practice what I preach. And what better way to start my blog than by sharing just why I believe wedding photographers should be blogging in the first place.

I hear from so many wedding photographers that they struggle to market themselves well. And as a fellow small business owner, I get it. There seem to be countless marketing strategies all vying for our attention: social media (eww - my least favorite), email marketing, YouTube, podcasts, webinars, cold contacts, Pinterest, paid advertisements … the list goes on and on and on.

One little secret about marketing — you can’t do it all. Think about your time and energy as a pitcher of water (or your favorite beverage — iced tea anyone?). Do you want to fill one cup to the brim or five cups with just a trickle? My recommendation is to pick one marketing strategy and do it well. For wedding photographers, I believe blogging is one of the best choices you can make.

Why?

When you blog well, not only do you attract your ideal, dream clients right to your website, but you reap so many other rewards, too.

It all comes down to credibility, portfolio, and SEO.

Are you ready? Let’s jump in!

Blogging & Credibility

Let’s begin with the foundation. Blogging builds your credibility

Every business owner wants to increase their credibility. Credibility supports healthy business growth. We’ve all been newbie business owners. We all know what it feels like when you have limited credibility. It can be really hard to compete against more experienced photographers who have a stronger foundation.

Couples want to know you can be trusted. They want their fears soothed and concerns addressed. They want to know that you’re a professional and can handle whatever is thrown your way.

Credibility breeds trust and confidence in you and your business.

But it can be hard to establish credibility, especially when you’re a new business. Blogging is a great way to get started.

Blogging increases your credibility by establishing your professionalism. It provides you with an invaluable opportunity to share your knowledge and expertise as a wedding photographer. It’s an opportunity to showcase your skills (more on that later) and demonstrate to clients what sets you apart from other photographers.

Consistent, relevant blogging shows couples that you take your business seriously, and they can too. #credibility

Blogging & your Portfolio

Every wedding photographer should be consistently working to establish a professional portfolio. Your portfolio is constantly evolving and changing as your business grows and matures.

While your website portfolio is a polished, professional curation of your best photography, your blog is an opportunity to share who you are in a more relaxed setting, so couples can get to know the photographer behind the photographs.

In addition, we all know wedding photography can be a crowded market. You may be limited to a geographic area and forced to compete against other photographers – both professionals and hobbyists –  in that space.

Blogging allows you to demonstrate what sets you apart from your competition. It’s a great opportunity to showcase your photography style and skill. It provides additional real estate in the online realm to market yourself, for free.

Blogging & SEO

Lastly, blogging is a fantastic way to boost your website's SEO (search engine optimization) and bring traffic right to your website. This makes it that much easier to convert potential clients into booked couples. Plus, a well-done blog will work for your business 24/7/365 for free. No paid promotions.

How does it work? Through keywords, consistency, and content.

Keywords

First – keywords. If you’ve never heard of keywords before they’re the words (or phrases) that tell search engines what your website is about. As a wedding photographer, you want Google to know that your website is for couples seeking a wedding photographer, not someone looking for a branding photographer.

When you use relevant, carefully placed keywords throughout your website, Google can easily identify who your website is for and then appropriately show your website in search engine results pages (SERPs, for you acronym lovers!) when individuals make search inquiries.

How does blogging tie into this?

Each blog post provides a chance for you to sprinkle keywords into your text, further telling Google that your website is relevant.

This is why I always recommend that your blog is part of your primary website and not on a secondary platform. Otherwise, you’re throwing away all those golden opportunities to boost your website’s SEO and bring increased visitors to your website.

A few notes on SEO & Keywords

Just a quick note on SEO – SEO is a complex, constantly evolving process. Many individuals specialize in SEO for businesses as a full-time career. It is important to know the basics of SEO before you make changes. Please – pretty please – don’t go and throw a bazillion keywords onto your website. This is called keyword stuffing, and Google will penalize you for this! Just like most things in life, there are rules to follow.

If you want to learn more about SEO and keywords, send me a comment and I’ll do a blog post on it. If it sounds too complicated and overwhelming, but you think your website could use an SEO facelift, consider hiring a professional. Consistency

Second – consistency. Search engines don’t like stale websites. A stale website is a live website that isn’t updated frequently.

When you blog consistently, you update your website regularly. This shows Google that your website is kept current. In turn, this tells Google you’re credible and your website isn’t going stale. Google rewards this by listing your website more frequently in response to applicable inquiries. (Google likes credibility too!).

Content

Lastly – content. Google likes websites that have relevant, high-quality content. What does relevant mean for you, as a wedding photographer? It means sharing information that pertains to your business and your clients. Remember, a search engine’s goal is to answer the inquiry it receives. Therefore, search engines really like websites that contain content with (good) answers. When you blog with relevant, high-quality content you make Google happy. Everyone likes a happy Google.

Now, I know you’re probably thinking, “Kylee, that’s all fine and dandy, but how do I know what to blog about so it’s relevant and high-quality content?”
