I was tired of seeing wedding photographers frustrated, discouraged, and unable to grasp the next level of success.

So I did something about it.

Kerri Marie Photography

A study on soft & clean branding partnered with light, ethereal, & elegant design.

This website was a passion project dreamed into fruition.

I had been dreaming of designing a website that incorporates mauve. There is something so feminine and elegant about the color.

I knew only a very specific photography style would work: light, ethereal, & soft.

Then, I found the perfect wedding photographs to bring it all together, and this passion project was born.

The color palette for the Kerri Marie Photography website.

Color Palette

With photographs in hand, I set about creating the perfect color palette.

I needed colors that would compliment the mauve I had selected. They also needed to support and contribute to the wedding photography.

I toyed around quite a bit with different neutrals before falling in love with this 5-shade palette: snow, alabaster, mauve, slate, and onyx. I decided to stay away from true black to avoid harsh tones. Instead, onyx is a deep grey.

Copywriting

Next, I wrote the website copy.

The tone is professional, befitting of a high-end wedding photographer. But I also included undertones of friendliness, understanding, and assurance.

The overall theme of this copy is:

Every moment is beautifully captured
so each memory can be cherished for years to come.

The copy focuses on a photographer whose timeless, unique photographs capture every essence of the couple’s extraordinary love story:

Let’s say goodbye to stilted poses and embrace photographs that capture every stolen smile, soulful stillness, and whispered, “I love you.”

Design & Web Strategy

I knew this website needed to feel light and airy to complement this stunning photography style.

I intentionally chose to minimize the slate and onyx colors, instead choosing snow and alabaster as the main section colors. Mauve serves as the primary accent color, and slate worked well as a contrasting color for CTA (Call to Action) buttons alongside the mauve. Slate and onyx provide the text colors for high contrast.

I scattered gently rounded section dividers throughout to continue to enhance feelings of softness. This website also utilized large areas of white space to contribute to an open, calm feel.

By keeping each section clean and separate, with simple copy and bold CTAs encouraging action, this website gently but clearly guides visitors. This improves usability and contributes to higher conversions.

Final Thoughts

This website embodies all I strive for as a wedding photographer web designer:

Beauty, simplicity, and elegance of design that supports and compliments your photographs, partnered with powerful, client-converting psychology and web strategy.

If you’re looking for a professional, clean, & elegant website that showcases your wedding photography, I’d love to work with you.

Lydia Pearson Photography

Elevating rich, warm colors to create a bright, clean website.

Designing the website for Lydia Pearson Photography was a fun study on taking a bold and rich color palette - designed to complement a specific photography style and brand aesthetic - and using it to create a bright, clean, professional website.

The 5-color palette for Lydia Pearson Photography.

Color Palette

The trickiest aspect of this color palette was selecting neutrals that would elevate and complement the rich trio of accent colors - sage, twilight, and redwood - without increasing the busyness of the palette.

I selected glacier white as the primary neutral (rather than a light, warm neutral) to keep the website clean and allow the accent colors to shine. I chose driftwood as a complimentary neutral to help balance the warm and cool tones in the color palette. Lastly, I decided to utilize twilight as a neutral and use it as the primary text color instead of selecting an additional dark hue.

Copywriting

The tone of this website is warm, kind, and welcoming while remaining professional. This complements the color palette and photography style.

The overall theme of this copy is:

Wedding photography for the brides who want
to remember every beautiful detail.

The copy focuses on photography that captures every beautiful detail the bride carefully planned:

You’re going to dedicate hours to ensure every detail of your big day is perfect.

You need a wedding photographer who can guarantee your wedding photographs will capture every detail. Because your wedding day only lasts a few hours, but your photographs will last generations.

Design & Web Strategy

I chose to utilize glacier white behind most sections with text. This helps the website maintain its bright, clean look. The accent colors redwood and sage provide beautiful pops of color that highlight the Call to Action (CTA) buttons. Then, I chose to incorporate driftwood (the light neutral) as the section (background) color on the individual Portfolio pages to provide subtle contrast.

Instead of one portfolio page, her best weddings each have their own web page. This expanded portfolio strategy allows more storytelling and copy to highlight how she serves and works with her couples. With Squarespace’s intuitive and user-friendly web design platform, it will be easy for her to update these pages as her portfolio changes.

Final Thoughts

You don’t need to say goodbye to a sophisticated, clean website simply because you have a bold, saturated color palette.

This website clearly demonstrates that with careful color selection and design, you can achieve both.
